چکیده

The Constructed Wetland Model No. 1 (CWM1) is a biokinetic model describing microbial dynamics and transformation and degradation processes in subsurface flow constructed wetlands. The implementation of CWM1 in the HYDRUS program package (©PC Progress s.r.o.) was verified using data from controlled environment column experiments. These 20-day long batch experiments used synthetic wastewater and were run at different temperatures. Columns were either planted with Carex rostrata Stokes, Schoenoplectus acutus Muhl. Ex Bigelow and with Typha latifolia L. or without plants. The minimal adjustment of model parameters between the sixteen setups was targeted and (1) initial bacteria concentrations, (2) initial adsorbed ammonium nitrogen concentrations, and (3) root oxygen loss rates inevitably needed to be set for each columns separately. For all other parameters – including the CWM1 model parameters – identical values have been used. Some biokinetic parameters had to be iteratively adjusted during calibration to allow anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic processes to occur in parallel in order to match measured data. This can be justified by the local effect of root zone re-aeration. The simulation results were evaluated by a new goodness of fit analysis method, deflection analysis. Overall, simulated contaminant concentrations had a very good fit to measured NH4–N and SO4–S concentrations, and a good fit to measured COD concentrations. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Reac ve Transport Modeling of Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands Using the HYDRUS Wetland Module

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are engineered water treatment systems designed to remove various types of contaminants. A large number of processes simultaneously contribute to water quality improvement in CWs. During the last decade, there has been a wide interest in the understanding of complex “constructed wetland” systems, including the development of numerical process-based models describing t...

Design-support and performance estimation using HYDRUS/CW2D: a horizontal flow constructed wetland for polishing SBR effluent.

The 4,000 PE (700 m(3)/d) wastewater treatment plant at Balf, Hungary was based on sequencing batch reactor technology with phosphorus precipitation as the tertiary step. Its effluent met quality thresholds on average, with above-threshold peaks mainly in winter. The HYDRUS/CW2D model package (PC Progress s.r.o.) was used to simulate the treatment performance of a horizontal flow constructed we...

Simulating vertical flow wetlands using filter media with different grain sizes with the HYDRUS Wetland Module

In this study, the simulation results of four vertical flow wetland systems using the HYDRUS Wetland Module are presented. The four wetland systems comprise three single-stage pilot scale systems and one full-scale two-stage system. The main difference between these systems is the filter media used, referred to as fine media, i.e., sand with a grain size distribution 0.063–4 mm, or coarse media...
